Secaucus senior guard Jamling Lama proudly displays the basketball he received for becoming the school’s all-time leading boys’ basketball scorer with 1,300 points
Although Secaucus High School senior
Jamling Lama is an accomplished soccer player and an excellent baseball player, his sport of choice has always been basketball.
“I guess I started playing when I was about four or five,” Lama said of basketball. “I have two older brothers [
Sonam, now 32, and
Pema, now 26] and they were the ones to teach me the game. I rebounded the ball for them when they shot and they did it for me also. They grew up in Hoboken and I would go and watch them play in the school yards. They would take me out with them some times to play.”

It wasn’t an easy high school basketball season for any local team, both boys’ and girls’ squads, so the boys’ team from Hoboken High School shouldn’t feel left out from dealing with the trials and tribulations caused by a global pandemic.
But incredibly, veteran head coach
Shawn Kolmer was able to lead the Redwings to a 6-3 record that no one saw coming.
“It started off with North Bergen having a case of COVID, so we got shut down,” Kolmer said. “Then St. Peter’s Prep had it and we got shut down again for two weeks because we were in close contact with them. We were only able to get three of the games we lost rescheduled. And with no county or state tournament to play for, it made things difficult.”

It is almost incredible that
Zanai Jones’ brilliant high school basketball career is just about over.
It seems like only yesterday that the sensational do-everything guard first stepped onto the floor at Hudson Catholic High School and now she’s poised to take the next step in her hoop dream life toward college life and a spot on the Villanova University women’s basketball roster in the fall.
“I know it all happened so fast,” Jones said. “It will all probably settle in when it’s over.”
So Jones wanted to make the most of her last season with the Hawks and leave her indelible mark at the school located on McGinley Square.
