Jamestown Fire and Police departments hosted their 6th Annual Battle of the Badges blood drive with Vitalant on Jan. 7-9 at the Civic Center which helped collect a total of 209 units of blood products for patients in need. Team Fire won the Battle with 105 votes over Team Law, which had 102 votes.
A total of 209 individuals volunteered to donate blood and 183 individuals were able to donate at the event. Thirty donors also donated Power Red Cells (2RBC), where two units of red blood cells are collected while returning platelets, plasma and a saline solution to the donor. Nineteen people volunteered for the first time.
JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Team Fire has officially won the 6th Annual Jamestown Battle of the Badges.
The fun competition pitted the Jamestown Police Department against the Jamestown Fire Department to raise awareness and blood donations during the three-day blood drive.
Donor Recruitment Representative Weldon Roberts with Vitalant reports that out of 209 volunteers who signed up, 183 were able to donate with 19 giving blood for the first time. 30 volunteers donated Double Red Cells and 13 gave Convalescent Plasma on the automated machines.
“We were able to collect a total of 209 products and exceed our promise to local hospitals,” Roberts added.
“Team Fire actually had 105 votes and Team Law was correct with 102 votes. It was a very close battle this year and I am very happy with the results. I hope that we will be able to continue the Battle again next year and bring back the sponsors for t-shirts.”
Vitalant will also be accepting Convalescent Plasma during the event.
“If you’ve tested positive for COVID-19 and recovered, your plasma may be able to help patients currently fighting the virus,” the organization states. “Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood. Using a specialized process, we separate and collect only the plasma portion of your blood and safely return the remaining components (red blood cells and platelets) to you.”
A plasma donation takes around an hour, but with the medical screening and review of health history, those who make a Convalescent Plasma donation should plan for about 2 hours.
Once a donation is made, participants will then select which team receives their vote. The winning department will then have bragging rights for the year until the next Battle of the Badges.
