Climate Is A Challenge For Growers Across The Globe

Hobby Farms Climate Is A Challenge For Growers Across The Globe Shifts in temperature and other climate changes present challenges for growers and farmers, but some folks are working on finding solutions. 1.4K views PHOTO: Courtesy of Dr. Jim Myers It’s always something. It could be flea beetles on the broccoli. Or blossom end rot on the tomatoes. Or powdery mildew blanketing the pumpkin patch. (Maybe all of the above!) Gardeners have long taken these and plenty of other challenges in stride. But, with increased temperatures and more frequent and extreme weather events, gardeners everywhere are facing some altogether new challenges.

Manufacturing returns to Davidson County

The Dispatch Twenty years ago, Davidson County was going through one of its worst economic periods as it watched its major industry pick up and move overseas, leaving massive job loss and economic chaos in its wake. Since before the turn of the 20th century, North Carolina has been known as an area where furniture and textile plants plentifully peppered the region; created generations of families working for the same company, and was a major revenue source for local government. In 1990, over 8,800 people were employed in Davidson County in furniture manufacturing and over 4,700 people were employed in textile manufacturing. By 2009, less than 1,600 local furniture jobs remained and less than 450 remained in textiles.

A CDC advisory recommending the vaccine will soon be sent to health departments, private physicians and travel agents, Jim Mize, a public health adviser at the CDC, said last week. “We strongly advise a traveler getting the vaccine at this time,” Mize said. “As of this morning, Israel has 16 cases diagnosed.” As a result of the CDC recommendation, the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia has recommended that mission participants get boosters before they travel. Federation received a reminder of the CDC position from the United Jewish Appeal in New York.

Whiskey Wednesday: Cascade Hollow Releases No 2 in Its Cascade Moon Whisky Series, and It s a Stunner!

Tweet Share Tullahoma-based Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. has premiered its latest special release under the Cascade Moon series, and this particular whiskey does indeed celebrate 150 years of the George A. Dickel brand. But when I first saw that, it reminded me of an old joke by Steven Wright: “I went down the street to the 24-hour grocery. When I got there, the guy was locking the front door. I said, Hey, the sign says you re open 24 hours. He said, Yes, but not in a row. You see, the George Dickel Distillery has a long and complex history, starting out as a spirits wholesaler and retailer before getting into the distilling biz. Over the decades, the distillery changed hands and even names a couple of times, and the latest ownership change came when international spirits powerhouse Diageo acquired Dickel as part of a series of purchases, mergers and brand swaps.
