There were only a few plants left from this year’s tomato crop, a couple of Indigo Rose and a couple of the new Midnight Roma varietal. Indigo Rose came out in 2011, with the just-released Midnight Roma the latest concoction in the vegetable breeding and genetics career of OSU Professor Jim Myers. U.S. stocks dipped on Monday as investors take a cautious stance ahead of the start of first-quarter earnings season. Conway G. Gittens reports.

Oregon State releases Midnight Roma, an antioxidant-rich purple tomato

Oregon State releases Midnight Roma, an antioxidant-rich purple tomato Updated 7:38 AM; Facebook Share CORVALLIS – The new Oregon State University-developed tomato Midnight Roma follows in the steps of 10-year-old Indigo Rose, the first antioxidant-rich purple tomato available on the market. Indigo Rose was bred by Jim Myers, vegetable breeder and professor in the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences. Midnight Roma is the result of crossing Oregon Star, a big, fleshy tomato good for slicing or paste with excellent flavor, and Indigo Rose, a dark purple tomato that contains anthocyanins, the same healthy antioxidants found in blueberries. Both varieties were also developed at OSU.
