A deportee who strangled his girlfriend three times in the space of an hour could have been seconds away from killing her , a judge says.
And Lokenitama Filipo s victim, in a statement before the Dunedin District Court, said she worried the 38-year-old would kill her when he was released from prison.
He was jailed for two years three months recently after pleading guilty to a representative charge of strangulation the week before his trial was due to start.

A 76-year-old Waimate man had his third drink-driving offence treated “as if it was his first” due to a 19-year gap between offending. James William Thomas Harvey, of Waimate, appeared in the Timaru District Court on Tuesday for sentencing. According to a police summary of facts, Harvey was stopped as he turned left from Belt St into George St “driving across the opposite side of the road in a wide turning circle” on April 10, 2021. “He continued on the wrong side of the road, gradually driving back onto the left-hand side of the road.” .

A 19-year-old drink-driver has been sentenced over a crash which left his passenger injured. Jakob Joseph Stachurski, of Geraldine, was disqualified from driving for 15 months when he appeared in Timaru District Court for sentencing on Tuesday. He had earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of driving with excess breath alcohol causing injury. Judge Jim Large told Stachurski that he would take both the fact it was his first offence and his early guilty plea into account.
