Green Plate Special: Did you thank a farmer today?
Nationwide, farms are struggling to find enough farmhands to raise and pick crops. In Maine, legislators are considering a law to raise their pay.
By Christine Burns Rudalevige
“Thank you” is a phrase that reminds me of mothering littles.
When I gave my kid a cookie, a muffin, or a pancake, if expressed appreciation was not immediately forthcoming, a gentle nudge for politeness was. “Honey, what do you say when someone hands you something to eat?” In my experience, prodding my kids for a “Thank you Mommy!” at home meant they mostly remembered their manners when they were out.

AUGUSTA- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefits Transfer card (EBT) equipment is available to agricultural producers and farmers markets in Maine. Interested producers and farmers markets should visit the Farm Food Access Program (FFAP) website or call the Maine Federation of Farmers Markets
(MFFM) to learn about the options for cost-free equipment. By accepting SNAP/EBT, producers and farmers markets help feed approximately one in eight Mainers participating in the SNAP Program.
The FFAP, developed by the Maine Bureau of Agriculture, Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and MFFM, launched in 2020 to provide more opportunities for individuals and families to purchase local foods with their federal SNAP benefits. FFAP positively benefits Maine s economy by increasing the number of farms and farmers markets in Maine accepting SNAP benefits. More than $200 milli
21-Year-Old Michelle Pfeiffer Photographed by Jim Britt, 1979
In 1979, lots of people were standing in front of garish purple-pink backgrounds, but few ever did it as well as Michelle Pfeiffer did.
These are publicity shots of a young Michelle Pfeiffer taken by Jim Britt in the very early in her career, when she was guest starring on Fantasy Island and playing a character named Bombshell in the short-lived Animal House spin-off series Delta House. Soon she’d costar in the also short-lived and pretty terrible B.A.D Cats.
Pfeiffer then costarred alongside another favorite, Fran Drescher, in The Hollywood Knights (1980), and soon after that and some other work, she landed her first major film role as the female lead in Grease 2 (1982).
