John Rathbun started to have trouble breathing last summer. After an emergency room visit, he later tested positive for COVID-19. He spent time at home recovering but things got worse. Rathbun, who s both a father and grandfather, needed to be admitted to the hospital.

Seniors were particularly hit hard; nearly 68% of all COVID-19-related deaths in Washoe County were among those 70 and older.   Darlene Dougherty is a Reno resident who lost her 84-year-old husband, Dave Randolph, in December. They had been married for 45 years. Dougherty and Randolph enjoyed antiquing and traveling together. Randolph started feeling sick around Thanksgiving and was eventually hospitalized at Renown Health in Reno. Due to hospital precautions, Dougherty could not visit her husband or be by his side when he died.

Richmond native unveils first feature film, I Can t Sleep

By Kathy Chouteau Ever since she was a little girl growing up in the Richmond View neighborhood, Gina Rose dreamed of making films. Next month, the rising African American and Chinese American filmmaker’s dream will become a reality when her first feature film, “I Can’t Sleep,” will be screened at The 46th Annual Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival set for Feb. 10-15, 2021. Aside from showing her film at the virtual festival, Rose will sit on one of its pre-recorded panels for female directors. To check out the film’s trailer, click here.
