El buscador HARPS-N (Buscador de Planetas por Velocidad Radial de Alta Precisión Norte) detectará planetas con una masa parecida a la Tierra y movimientos estelares de menos de un metro por segundo y será inaugurado este lunes a las 12.00 horas, en las instalaciones del Telescopio italiano Nazionale Galileo (TNG) instalado en el Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos del Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), en La Palma, según informa el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). HARPS-N, que empezará su búsqueda este verano, ha sido diseñado para detectar y estudiar planetas extrasolares o exoplanetas y será el buscador de planetas más preciso del hemisferio norte, según los astrónomos del proyecto. Se trata “de un gemelo casi exacto” del instrumento HARPS ya instalado en el Observatorio Europeo del Sur, en el telescopio de 3,6 metros en La Silla (Chile). Launched in 1952, the classic timepiece was named after eight stars that represent eight precision records set by Omega at Kew-Teddington and the Geneva Observatory during the mid-20th century.
In different combinations of colours and effects, the fifth generation boasts a similar look to models redesigned in 1982 with a barrel-shaped case featuring half-moon facets at the top and bottom and four claws on its side.
Since 1995 when exoplanet explorers from the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz –who were recently awarded half of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of a planet orbiting a sunlike star named 51 Pegasi– thousands of extrasolar planets have been found, including potentially Earth-like worlds, along with bizarre objects that bear no resemblance to any of the planets in our solar system.
Twenty-Six Years Later…
Twenty-six years later, it is now possible to capture images of planets that could potentially sustain life around nearby stars using a newly developed system for mid-infrared exoplanet imaging. In tandem with a very long observation time, a new study’s authors say they can now use ground-based telescopes to directly capture images of planets about three times the size of Earth within the habitable zones of nearby stars.
