Black soldiers of Civil War exhibit to open Feb 12

The Lewes History Museum will open its doors to a unique exhibition combining art and African American history at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12. Seventeen Men: Portraits of Black Civil War Soldiers provides a rare opportunity for the public to glimpse the lives of men who served in the 25th United States Colored Troops during the American Civil War. “Ultimately, the goal was to take 17 small, photographic images that had come to me purely by accident and good fortune, and attempt through research, drawing and writing to help people learn each man’s story and visualize the living man,” said author and artist Shayne Davidson.

Obituary: Prof Wallace Foulds, renowned ophthalmologist

Died: November 12, 2020. PROFESSOR Wallace Stewart Foulds, who has died aged 96, was an internationally renowned ophthalmologist who gave his grateful patients the precious gift of sight, earning the eternal thanks and respect of them and their families. Rarely was that more in evidence when, having stepped off a flight at London’s Heathrow, he was stopped at customs and asked to open his case. Peering inside, the customs official spotted the name and address label, and immediately closed the case. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Professor Foulds,” he said. “You saved the sight of my uncle in India 25 years ago and are regarded as a hero by our family.”
