ITHACA, NY Ithacaâs Planning and Economic Development Committee got its first chance to discuss the proposal for Inlet Island after the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency chose Finger Lakes Development as the preferred proposal.
Finger Lakes Development, led by developer Steve Flash, proposed two separate buildings, one with 50-56 affordable housing units serving a range of 30-120% of area median income ($18,000-$72,000), and one with 78-90 units for extended stays, called a âhometel.âÂ
Reviews were generally mixed from committee members, with most liking some aspects while not liking others.
Committee Chair Seph Murtagh said he likes that Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS) is involved, and he likes that the affordable housing ensures equitable waterfront development. However, in addition to the evergreen concerns of parking, he said he was also concerned with the lack of active ground floor uses in the proposal.
As a long-time Cliff Street resident, and as an urban planner with over three decades of experience, domestic and international, I once again find my neighborhood under assault from Ithacaâs City Hall. Surprisingly, the assault is being led by none other than our West Hill alderwoman, Cynthia Brock, with the hearty support of alderman George McGonigal. The so-called âCliff Street Retreatâ development being proposed for the Incodema property at 407 Cliff Street has already passed Brockâs Planning and Economic Development Committee, and has received Conceptual Approval, with their votes, from Common Council.
Although described by Cynthia Brock and the developer as an âinnovativeâ mixed-use residential and commercial project, the rezoning will in fact introduce large-scale residential development into the middle of the Cliff Street neighborhood: a 23,300 square foot commercial development the size of the building housing Chipotle and Firehouse Subs on Mead
ITHACA, NY The draft legislation for reorganizing the City of Ithacaâs government from mayor-council to council-manager was presented to the City Administration Committee at its June 23 meeting. While the public referendum wonât take place until November 2022, the committee is working on getting the plan approved by Council by the end of the year.
City Attorney Ari Lavine said he wanted to make sure he was headed in the right direction as they worked on the language of the legislation.
Alderperson George McGonigal asked if the council-manager format was the only one the committee had explored, or if they had looked at changing the role of the mayor or increasing his/her salary.
