Amateur radio operators key during Hugo, host field day to practice skills

SUMTER, S.C. It was September of 1989 and the wind and rain of Hurricane Hugo were battering the state.
Vic Jones was the director of emergency services in Sumter at the time, and remembers the storm well.
“All of the power was out in Sumter County, and the estimate was 80 percent of our roads and streets were blocked,” Jones said. “Most communication was interrupted as well.”

“To me, Harehills has always been Harehills,” she said.
“For me it is home – I played on the streets of Harehills.
“It was a really friendly place to be around. It’s very multicultural and that is what Harehills is known for. I think growing up here made me really streetwise – you’re out on the streets playing cricket and smashing a few windows as you go on.
“I only have really fond memories. Other people think Harehills is this place that’s scary and has lots of crime – I knew there was deprivation, that was obvious.
“But having spent 27 years of my life there, I have nothing but fond memories.”
Obituaries » Michael L. Mudd Michael Lee Mudd, 65, of Warrenton, entered eternal peace with the Lord on December 1, 2020, at Fauquier Hospital.
He was born December 27, 1954, in Fauquier County, to the late Emma Mudd (Scroggins) and Ned Mudd.
Raised in Fauquier and living in Virginia his whole life, he enjoyed many avenues of hobbies. One of his passions was basketball, that lead him to play for Fauquier High Class of â73 and become known for his âHarlem Form.â He went onto drive a freight truck for over 30 years, hauling a multitude of different materials. He visited quarries throughout Virginia and meeting many friends along the way. Always a dedicated Dallas Cowboys fan, he loved drag racing, fishing, swimming laps, reading the Sunday paper and coaching/watching youth soccer.
