WASHINGTON The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF’s) National Racial Equity Initiative for Social Justice (NREI) fellowship program this month is marking one year of advancing social justice and racial equity and welcoming four new Congressman John R. Lewis Social Justice Policy Fellows. CBCF launched NREI in June of 2020 in response to the protests of police killings of unarmed Black Americans and the historically unlevel playing field for minorities. NREI’s mission is to combat systemic injustice and advance racial equity, human rights, education, and community and economic development opportunities for the Black community. In July 2020, the fellowship program was renamed to honor the late Congressman John R. Lewis, a leader in the U.S. Congress and the fight for racial equity. The John R. A long time Cannon County educator has been named principal of Short Mountain Elementary School. Director of Schools Freddy Curtis has named Candice Prater Lewis to the post.

The new principal has lived in Cannon County most of her life. She graduated from Short Mountain Elementary School and Cannon County High School. She is a graduate of Motlow State Community College and earned a Master in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Technological University.
After teaching 12 years, Lewis says she is looking forward to becoming the principal at Short Mountain Elementary School. She said, “I encourage an environment where all stakeholders are involved in education by cultivating relationships with parents and students, which has proven effective in the 12 years I have taught. It is my aspiration to use my experience and knowledge to make a difference as principal!”
Wayne City High School held its awards day program Friday. Over $535,000 in awards were announced during the program. Among the scholarships awarded and the scholarship recipients were: Jaxson Youngblood, receiving the Wayne County VFW Scholarship in the amount of $2000. Youngblood and Jayden Bailey also were winners of the Orlen Brach and Babe Ward Vocational Scholarships. Adam Loker received the IAA Foundation Harris Thomas Scholarship in the amount of $2000. Jayden Bailey received the Edward and Emma Cole Memoral Scholarship in the amount of $3200 for two years. Several other scholarships worth up to $1000 each were awarded. Jaden Boyd, Madelyn Caudle, Jarrett Lewis, Adam Loker, Kalyn Meritt and Kelcee Seymour were named Illinois State Scholars. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 2129 new cases of the coronavirus Saturday and 21 additional deaths. State numbers as of this morning are at 1,353,226 cases and 22,193 deaths.
