A former health educator at St. Johnsbury School is trying to draw attention to possible health risks associated with mask-wearing.
Amy Hornblas, who spent a decade teaching students about making healthy choices, is conducting the Vermont Mask Survey to evaluate potential health hazards among people required to wear masks. She refers to her mission as a âcitizen scientist project.â
The survey asks respondents to note how often they wear masks and whether they experience any complications, such as headaches, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, difficulty communicating, or physical, mental, or emotional discomfort. It can be found online at vtmasksurvey.com.
Results from an initial group of respondents are available in a fall report, which can be found on the website.
ST. JOHNSBURY â Residents at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation center sat in chairs near their windows, or from their beds, and waved at a group of local students who set out last week to spread holiday cheer. They dressed as elves, and some wore reindeer antlers.
Isolated since the pandemic began, nursing home residents have been hit the hardest and are the most vulnerable. Spreading cheer to them was a top priority for students who belong to The Sunshine Squad, part of the CatCH afterschool program at the St. Johnsbury School.
Staff members, April Sholan and Tammy MacQueen lead the after school club, whose purpose is to spread sunshine through random acts of kindness in our community, explains Sholan.
