Wizardry meets science: Harry Potter alum invests in cell-free biomanufacturing startup : Biofuels Digest

FabricNano uses cell-free biomanufacturing, which involves coaxing enzymes and proteins to produce chemicals on a DNA wafer. This method avoids many of the pitfalls of fermentation-based production of biobased chemicals, where finicky organisms need to be kept alive, yields are often low, and separations can be expensive. “Why is Coke not shifting to bio-based plastics? Because it’s too expensive and the market is too price sensitive,” Grant Aarons, FabricNano’s cofounder and CEO, tells Fortune. The company plans on using the funding to evaluate the scaling potential of the DNA wafers and advance its first product, 1,3-propanediol.   “1,3-propanediol is a well-established chemical product, but it is expensive and, basically, it is too slow to biomanufacture,” says John Woodley, a chemical engineering professor at the Technical University of Denmark who serves as a scientific adviser to FabricNano. “There is an opportunity to drive this much faster and bring the pri

ERC Advanced Grant to understand enzyme stability

Date Time ERC Advanced Grant to understand enzyme stability A new ERC project aims to improve our understanding of enzyme stability and broaden the field of potential applications for biocatalysis. Professor John Woodley from DTU Chemical Engineering has received an Advanced Grant from ERC, the European Research Council. The grant of EUR 2.4 M will for the next five years fund research in enzymes and the effect on their stability when utilised in science and industry. The enzyme-based industry is vast, but stability remains an issue. The reason behind it is a fundamental scientific question that remains unanswered. In nature, enzymes, which are proteins, catalyse the chemical processes needed for cells to function. Outside of nature, in science and industry alike, they perform the same functions, catalysing chemical processes to the benefit of the food industry, biotechnology, chemistry, and medicine.

Everyone s hands are dirty in Piney Point mess including Art Roth s

Art Roth appears to be yet another person with dirt on his hands at Piney Point. It’s not going to come off with just soap and contaminated water, either. Those pointing fingers in the Manatee County environmental calamity at the former fertilizer processing facility have largely missed the man hiding in the shadows of the gyp stacks. Roth is a longtime consultant in the fertilizer business, yet little else is known about him. Somehow, he has managed to avoid anyone dredging up his past for the last two decades. Roth was pivotal in all of this. He was the point man responsible for a New York company called HRK Holdings LLC to purchase Piney Point for $4.3 million in 2006. He was never listed as a managing partner in HRK, but he appeared to be heavily involved as a representative, and the email address he used was associated with the company.
