Sophie Wilde thought the audition was a complete disaster. She had balanced a tripod and camera on a wobbly tower of books, recruited a friend to read opposite her via Zoom, and embarked on a frenzy of tidying so it wasnât obvious that she was in her bedroom. Sophie had no doubt she wanted this job â it was the first audition where she had felt gut-certainty that it was the right role. She sent off the video during the early stages of the coronavirus lockdown. A few weeks passed with no response. Then a month. Then a few more. Well, Sophie reasoned, welcome to acting. It is, after all, an industry built on the back of the proverb that if at first you donât succeed, try, try again.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical has confirmed its long-awaited UK premiere, following its critically-acclaimed Broadway debut in 2019.
Directed by Alex Timbers and with a book by John Logan, the musical brings Baz Luhrmann s iconic movie to life, remixed for today in a new musical mash-up that invites you into a world of romance and splendour with a lavish, immersive set.
The musical follows aspiring writer Christian and dancer Satine as they fall in love, before pressure mounts on Satine as Moulin Rouge owner Harold Zidler relies on her to appease the Duke of Monroth, whose money keeps the establishment going.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical will begin performances at the Piccadilly Theatre in London on Friday, November 12 and will be booking through to March 12, 2022. Priority booking begins on Monday (May 17), with tickets on general sale from May 24.
