Boy, three, tripped over a clump of grass before falling into a canal

A three-year-old boy tripped on a tuft of grass while feeding the ducks and fell headfirst into a canal where he tragically drowned, a coroner heard today. Dylan Milsom was swept downstream after toppling into the fast flowing water of the Kennet and Avon Canal in Newbury, Berkshire, on a family day out on Saturday, March 13, just before Mother s Day. The blonde-haired toddler walked along the canal towpath to find hungry ducks, venturing closer to the edge of the river so that his bread would land in the water. But he stumbled and was sucked into a weir, before his body was spotted floating under the water by rescuers, Berkshire Coroners Court was told. 

New Covid-19 vaccine study for pregnant women launches

The UK’s first Covid-19 vaccine study for pregnant women is set to launch. Around 235 women will be given the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine or a placebo in the study, which is taking place at 11 hospital sites in Newcastle, Leeds, London, Oxford, Gillingham, Edinburgh and Southampton. More than 100,000 pregnant women have already been vaccinated in the US, mainly with mRNA vaccines including Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, with no safety concerns. For this reason, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) in the UK has said it is preferable for pregnant women in the UK to be offered the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.

Surrey van driver convicted over death of elderly woman in fatal crash

A VAN driver has been found guilty of causing the death of an elderly woman in Henley. Arif Hussain, 34, of London Road, Camberley, was found guilty following a trial at Oxford Crown Court on Friday. The Surrey man was charged in 2019 after a fatal crash in Northfield End on May 10 between a van and an elderly pedestrian. 84-year-old Mary Holt, also known by her family as June, died at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford two weeks later from severe head injuries. On Friday, Hussain was sentenced to a community order of two years, fined £3,500, given 120 hours of unpaid work to be completed in two years and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
