But surely there must be an easier way than being pregnant for nine months (and all the nausea, hormonal changes, and inability to sleep on one’s stomach this implies), giving birth, and having to feed and care for a young person and prepare them to be a useful member of society. Plus they’re so expensive, all that food and clothing and electronic equipment, not to mention college tuition.

Waikato disability advocate receives NZ Order of Merit in fight for accessibility

Dominico Zapata/Stuff When John McIntosh was very young, doctors told his parents he was unlikely to live past middle age. “My parents taught me really early in life to just get along with life. Don t let your disability impact on your life. Don’t let yourself be known by your disability it’s just something you’ve got,” McIntosh said. “So that’s how I lived my life. I played the drums in bands, I worked in the farming sector, but I didn’t talk about my disability.” It was a downturn in agriculture that pushed him towards a career working and advocating in the disability sector.
