Urban League Hosts ‘100 Years of Black History in L.A.’ By Cora Jackson-Fossett, Staff Writer Published March 4, 2021   Achieving a century of progress is not easy, but the Los Angeles Urban League (LAUL) defied the odds by celebrating its 100 th anniversary this year. Founded in 1921, the heralded organization has made a huge impact for the last 10 decades by promoting business opportunities, training and development and coalition building on behalf of African Americans. To commemorate the centennial milestone, LAUL kicked-off its speakers panel on February 27, which focused on “100 Years of Black History in Los Angeles.” Michael Lawson, LAUL president/CEO, hosted a panel of community leaders to discuss the status of African American success in both the city and nation and how those efforts assist LAUL’s mission to empower communities and change lives.

Success story: Jail hopes Auburn inmate s recovery inspires more

Randy Smith went to the Cayuga County Jail on Wednesday under much different circumstances than he went there exactly six months earlier. Smith, 46, of Auburn, was presented with his recovery peer advocate certification that day by Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck. Sponsored by the Heroin Epidemic Action League, Smith s training prepares him to support people in recovery from the same addiction that brought him to the jail Aug. 23. And Schenck believes Smith s success will lead to better peer support services at the facility. Six months earlier, though, Smith didn t feel like a success. A Cortland native, Smith started drinking when he was 14. By the time he was 21 he was using cocaine and other drugs, but alcohol was the one he abused the hardest. When he was 24, an assault charge landed him in drug court in Ithaca, as well as probation. So he got sober, and got a job as a certified nursing assistant. Filmed on the Hooker-Dunham stage, Laplante’s performance premieres on BCTV and YouTube at 7:30 tonight. SOLOs is a collaborative production of the Hooker-Dunham and the Rock River Players, designed to bring creativity to the fore during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s a pleasure to see the talents of so many people combine to create authentic performances. The outpouring of talent and the ability to reach a wide audience both locally and internationally is deeply rewarding,” said Jon Mack, director of the Hooker-Dunham Theater.

Tributes pour in for Slimbridge AFC stalwart Keith Scott

Affectionately known as Santa , he was involved with the club for more than 20 years. A tribute released by the club said: Scotty played an instrumental part in helping the club achieve the elevation from the Stroud Leagues to our position in the Southern League today. He was a well-respected and liked life member of the club serving on the committee for a majority of his time with the club. Many tributes from past and present players and local clubs have been pouring in via social media since the news broke. Alongside the likes of Paul Chappell and John Mack he worked tirelessly in the background to build up the facilities around Thornhill Park and would always be one of the first to volunteer to help out on projects around the ground accompanied by his faithful companion Woody.
