It belongs to a group of diseases known as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), which also includes essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV). Myelofibrosis can occur on its own, or develop as a natural evolution of ET and PV.
According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, myelofibrosis occurs in about 1.5 per 100,000 people in the U.S. annually, and although it may present in patients of any age, it is more likely to be diagnosed in people over the age of 50.
