Daily cases of COVID-19 are headed back upward, both in Maine and across the country. The seven-day average in Maine has nearly tripled, rising from 20 to 58, in the span of two weeks. And while current averages are still well below the late-spring figures – and a fraction of the worst of the pandemic at the start of the year – they are headed in the wrong direction.
Maine has been faring better than most states due, in part, to a 60 percent vaccination rate that is higher than in all but a handful of other states. Nationally, the seven-day average of new cases jumped 53 percent during the past week, while hospitalizations increased 32 percent and COVID-related deaths are up 19 percent since last week, federal officials said on Thursday.

With so many fitness centers shuttered, gym rats across the country scrambled to acquire gear of their own, only to find it had all sold out. Goldens’ Cast Iron, a Georgia company known for making parts for factories and ships, decided to make exercise equipment of their own and fill the need of millions of Americans across the country.

Gallagher had a long career as an attorney and hospitality industry executive. That work included serving as executive vice president and general counsel for the Hilton Hotels Corp. Beginning in 2000, he served as chief executive officer of Park Place Entertainment.
After Gallagher left Park Place Entertainment two years later, it was renamed Caesars Entertainment. Many of the major hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip are owned by Caesars Entertainment, including Caesars Palace on the west side of the resort corridor and several on the east side of the highway.
