Ensuring 11,000 athletes from more than 200 countries descend on one chosen city over the course of 16 days is a logistical challenge at the best of times. Now consider doing it at the tail end of a global pandemic that’s upended airlines’ flight schedules, closed international borders and made any movement without jabs and multiple Covid tests impossible. For hundreds of Olympic organizing officials eyeing the start of the Tokyo Games in just 18 days it’s a major headache. Forget about medal tallies and post-race parties (to the limited extent they’re permitted at all), just getting to Japan on time is half the battle.

President Cyril Ramaphosa hit out at telecommunications companies for bringing legal action against plans to issue more broadband spectrum, urging them to resolve the matter for the benefit of the country.
MTN Group, which has the second most subscribers in the country, and Telkom both appealed to courts about how the regulator is arranging the auction, which was announced in October after years of delays.
“The legal case that is under way threatens to delay the progress that we have all anticipated,” Ramaphosa told parliamentarians in Cape Town on Thursday. “I appeal to all stakeholders to speedily resolve the litigation as soon as possible to enable the licensing process to be concluded for the benefit of all South Africans.”
SA to receive enough Covid-19 shots to cover two-thirds of population by end-2021
By John Bowker
(Bloomberg) – South Africa is on track to receive enough Covid-19 vaccines to cover about two-thirds of the population by the end of the year, made up of both Pfizer Inc. and Johnson & Johnson doses.
The country has secured orders for 52.6 million shots, including 31.2 million of the single-dose J&J version, President Cyril Ramaphosa told parliament on Thursday. They are due to be delivered gradually over the rest of the year, although about half won’t arrive until after September, he said.
“The estimated times for the delivery of the vaccines depends on several factors, many of which are beyond our control,” he said.
