The heroic tale of the 1868 fire of Llanfyllin

THE residents of Llanfyllin saved their town from destruction in 1868. While the townspeople slept during one April night a fire had broken out at the Penydrei flannel factory. By midnight the town awoke to the sight of the fire. The Montgomeryshire Express reported ‘The alarm spread with great rapidity, and in spite of the lateness of the hour, 91 great numbers of the inhabitants immediately assembled.’ The report hails the leaders, John Jones of Corner House, John Kyle of Penllwyn and Evan Watkins, for ‘speedily setting to work to endeavour to extinguish the flames, which were pouring from all the windows.’

East Belfast show of strength an attack on the Ogle family

The family of a murdered man believe a loyalist show of strength in east Belfast was aimed at them and others who have been standing up to these people , friends have said. The Belfast Telegraph understands that close relatives of Ian Ogle, who was murdered outside his Cluan Place home two years ago, are traumatised and worried for their safety after a masked gang was caught on camera patrolling the streets. The incident, which is being investigated by the PSNI, is linked to an internal row within the UVF, and a police presence is believed to have prevented an attack on a home.
