In 1851, members of a California state militia called the Mariposa Battalion became the first white men to lay eyes on Yosemite Valley. The group was largely made up of miners. Name changes for the posts have been talked about before. But the Black Lives Matter and social justice movements shifted the conversation. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts had the name-change provision added to the bill.
In the summertime, the overall defense bill received overwhelming support from both Republicans and Democrats, both in the House and Senate.
