Chalk art for foster care

Local artist Leavy Wells Jr. creates sidewalk chalk art during the DTSB First Fridays event in downtown South Bend. Janice Purnell, foster parent recruiter for Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth, a nonprofit, therapeutic foster care licensing agency, invited both artists and the community to create sidewalk artwork in support of foster care programs for children. May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and Indiana has a challenge in finding foster parents for the 12,000 children currently in foster care.

Margaret Eldred s art highlights farms and fields

Drawing on travels abroad and locally, artist Margaret Eldred explores farming in all of its phases with paintings, photographs, drawings and photographs in “THE GOOD EARTH: Farms and Fields from California to Cape Town” at YoloArts Gallery 625 in Woodland.   Eldred is a Davis resident and a retired lecturer from UC Davis, where she earned a Ph.D. in English. She studied art at Sacramento City College in the classes of Chris Daubert, Frank Zamora and Gioia Fonda.   Described by YoloArts creative director, Janice Purnell, as “kind of like a visual travelogue,” the exhibit has six thematic sections: date orchards, nut orchards, olive orchards, row crops, rice and field crops, accompanied by paintings and pen-and-ink drawings for each theme.
