Twenty years ago today, on May 12, 2001, Tim McGraw became a doctor sort of. It was on that date that the singer received an honorary doctorate degree in humanities from the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
McGraw was briefly enrolled at the University of Louisiana at Monroe before moving to Nashville; the future country star received a baseball scholarship to the college and, while there, pledged the Eta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha. McGraw attended his honorary degree ceremony with his wife, Faith Hill, who was pregnant with their third daughter at the time. JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson Zoo is now open Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9 from 10:00 am to 4 pm.
According to zoo leaders, power is fully restored in all areas after several outages due to Tuesday’s severe weather.
Ticket sales have resumed at jacksonzoo.org/shop.

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Due to severe weather on Tuesday, the Jackson Zoo will be temporarily closed after experiencing some power outages in the park.
The zoo will be closed on Thursday, May 6.
Two seats on the Jackson City Council in wards 4 and 5 will be decided.
Three-term incumbent Councilman Charles Tillman is running to remain on the council in Ward 5. He faces opposition from longtime Jackson resident and political newcomer Vernon Hartley.
The Ward 4 runoff will feature Brian Grizzell, an educator, businessman and ward representative, facing Jacqueline Amos, a member of the county and state Democratic parties.
Both races could be close judging from results of the primary held April 6. All other races, including the mayoral race, will be decided in the general election on June 8.
Polls will be open for ward 4 and 5 voters from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Precinct information can be found on the city of Jackson website.
