Case Dismissed Against Man Once Accused Of Auto Shop Burglary

By Jackson Wilde & The Herald Journal • 6 hours ago A man once charged in 1st District Court with the alleged burglary of a Smithfield auto body shop had his case dismissed on Monday. Ryan Paul Dean, 39, had been charged with third-degree theft and third-degree burglary for an incident alleged to have happened on Dec. 27 and was set to appear for a preliminary hearing on Monday.   During Dean’s appearance, however, Cache County prosecutor Jacob Gordon told the court the alleged victim in the case had moved out of the country and it was unclear if or when he would ever return.

Man Sustains Extremely Serious Injuries After Falling Five Stories On Construction Site

By Jackson Wilde & The Herald Journal • Apr 1, 2021 Logan City Police say a construction worker was seriously injured after plummeting five stories at a construction site on Wednesday. Capt. Curtis Hooley told The Herald Journal said a couple of workers were installing trusses on the top floor of a building on 800 E near USU. Hooley said at some point the man’s ladder became unstable and he fell through a window.   “I don’t know if the ladder collapsed or he fell off the ladder,” Hooley said, “but he unfortunately fell through the open window there wasn’t glass in it, I don’t think.”

2021 UN World Wildlife Day Film Showcase Winners announced

Share New York: The CITES Secretariat, Jackson Wild™ and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), announced today the winners of the 2021 World Wildlife Day Film Showcase on the theme of “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet.” The eleven award-winners were picked from 38 finalists, out of a total of 275 entries in five categories, four of which comprised both long form and short form winners. In addition to the finalists, 12 programs were selected for recognition as “Honorable Mentions.” The winning films were unveiled during the high-level virtual event marking the World Wildlife Day celebrations, in the presence of representatives of UN Member States, UN System organizations, major civil society groups and representatives of Indigenous and local communities.

Man Bound Over For Trial In Garden City Kidnapping Case Pleads Not Guilty

By Jackson Wilde & The Herald Journal • Mar 11, 2021 A man accused of kidnapping and beating a woman in Garden City was bound over for trial in 1st District Court on Tuesday. John Joseph Sharkey, 43, faces 11 charges including first-degree aggravated kidnapping, second-degree and third-degree aggravated assault, and first-degree aggravated sexual assault.   After Sharkey’s preliminary hearing on Tuesday, Judge Angela Fonnesbeck found probable cause existed for all charges. Woman Pleads Guilty To Felonies Related To Theft Of Over $128,000

By Jackson Wilde & The Herald Journal • Mar 9, 2021 A Cache Valley woman pleaded guilty in 1st District Court on Monday to charges related to the theft of over $128,000 while in control of the victims’ funds. Melissa Ann Niederhauser, 40, pleaded guilty to two second-degree felonies: theft and unlawful dealing of property by a fiduciary. In accordance with a plea agreement, 22 additional felonies were dismissed in exchange for the plea.   Defense attorney Erin Byington told the court the plea agreement would also allow for a two-step reduction in charges reducing the second-degree felonies to class-A misdemeanors once the full amount of restitution is paid. Niederhauser will also be required to make a payment of $20,000 by the time of sentencing.
