Wednesday, 7 July 2021, 11:50 am It was a weekend filled with laughs, wonder and intrigue at Baycourt Community and Arts Centre, with over 800 people gathering to watch Indian Ink’s powerful play ‘Paradise or the Impermanence Ice Cream’. As audiences settled into their seats and hushed darkness took over the theatre, Kutisar (Jacob Rajan) is lit up on stage as he wakes in purgatory. Selling out its two-week preview season in 2020, Paradise is touted as a showcase for Rajan’s talents, with a solo performance channelling seven characters. Rajan has cemented himself as one of New Zealand’s finest thespians. He was made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit in 2013 for his services to theatre, and in 2002 he received the prestigious Arts Foundation Laureate. He won the prestigious Fringe First Award in Edinburgh with Indian Ink’s first play Krishnan’s Dairy back in 1997, and has since charmed audiences the world over with the one-man play – a feat he aims to repeat when he shortly takes

SUPPLIED Rajan and Indian Ink co-founder Justin Lewis got the idea for the play after a trip to Mumbai. Rajan delivers a solo performance of seven characters in the play, which sold out a two-week preview season last year, while Lewis is director.
