Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Jaffrey blood donors give 32 pints at short-notice drive

Published: 3/1/2021 4:13:37 PM Donors who attended the blood drive hosted by the Jaffrey Bible Church on Thursday donated a total of 32 pints of blood. “The need for blood is constant. Particularly in the winter months. And that is compounded this year by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mary Brant, communications manager for the Red Cross Northern New England region. In late February, several winter storms in a row resulted in several canceled blood drives across the state, Brant said, resulting in a need for several short-notice drives across the state to replenish blood banks at area hospitals. Brant said the two types in most demand are, as they always are, O positive, which is the most common blood type, and O negative, which is considered the “universal donor” and can be given to a person with any blood type.

During its regular board meeting Tuesday, the Jaffrey Select Board considered proposals from both Consolidated Communications and Comcast to provide fiber internet to underserved residents. The federal definition of broadband internet is 3 Mbps for download speed, and 25 Mbps for upload speed – both must be true to qualify as high speed internet. Towns are allowed by law to enter into bonds to build infrastructure to provide broadband speeds.

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Library plants the seed for new program

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript Published: 4/17/2017 11:31:14 PM The Jaffrey Public Library’s newest endeavor will ask its patrons to check out items that will hopefully never be checked back in. This Saturday, the library will have a soft opening for its seed lending library, a program that will allow townspeople to check out heirloom seeds from the library in the hopes of creating an atmosphere where community members are growing heirloom plants and sharing their seeds with others. “The idea is to save, preserve, and share heirloom seeds in the community,” said Jaffrey Public Library Director Julie Perrin, in a phone interview Monday. “It’s an important initiative for the environment because it supports sustainability and helps to propagate heirloom seeds.”
