Shifting calving distribution can improve revenue

Ginger Rowsey Experts say cattle producers can see profits increase when a larger percentage of cows calve in the first 30 days of the calving season. Report from University of Tennessee shows managing this reproductive benchmark can add profitability to the herd. The calving distribution of a beef cattle herd  can have a significant impact on producers’ profits. A new publication from the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture illustrates this impact.  The report, titled “Reproduction’s Impact on Beef Cattle Herd Profitability,” demonstrates how increasing the percentage of calves born in the first 30 days of a calving season can lead to increased returns for producers. Likewise, as the percentage of early season calves dropped, so did profit potential.

F5 Networks Urges Customers to Update to New

Unlike previous notable F5 exploits, not all of these can be easily hand-waved away by restricting external access to the administrative interfaces known as the control plane, says Justin Rhinehart, senior analyst at Bishop Fox. Two critical exploits disclosed this week affect the so-called data plane, which is the part responsible for handing any and all traffic going through the BIG-IP platform, he says. The only way to mitigate these exploits is by patching. In a worst-case scenario, Rhinehart says, an attacker can use a vulnerable F5 BIG-IP appliance to break into the broader enterprise network.   Remote command execution in a location with such privileged access is absolutely the stuff of nightmares, he says, Attackers can use these devices to gain a foothold on a victim s network [and] attack sensitive targets that are not usually accessible from the outside world.

Raising reliable recipient cows

Ginger Rowsey Linda and Rod Barnes, along with daughter, Dolly, raise 180 beef cattle near Selmer, Tenn. They’ve found a niche market by providing recipient cows for embryo transfer from purebred donor cows. Mid-South beef producers find a profitable niche market with recipient cows. Rod and Linda Barnes raise 180-head of SimAngus cattle near Selmer, Tenn.   That’s 180 black cows.but the calves come in all colors.  “People who drive by and see the herd often ask us, ‘How did you get a solid white calf or a solid red calf out of that black cow?’” Linda recalled. “I tell them it would take a long time to explain.”
