Southwest Virginia s largest solar farm project approved in Pulaski County

Pulaski County will be the site of the largest solar energy farm in Southwest Virginia and one of the largest on the East Coast. On a 3-1 vote, the board of supervisors approved a special use permit that opens the way for Chicago-based Hecate Energy and its Virginia-based partner AgriSunPower to lease 2,700 acres of private farmland for the $400 Million project near the New River Valley Airport and NRV Commerce Park. Supervisor Charles Bopp voted no, saying he opposed the project and felt bound to represent those residents who also oppose it. Board Chairman Joseph Guthrie, who is among the many landowners who have agreed to lease farm land for the project, abstained. He had opened the meeting by reading a detailed statement defending the legality of participating in the decision process.

Largest solar farm in Southwest Virginia on agenda in Pulaski County

Pulaski County’s government year will begin with consideration of what would be the largest solar farm in Southwest Virginia — and one of the largest in the state. Hecate Energy and its Virginia affiliate, AgriSunPower, have applied for a special use permit that would allow property owners in the county to lease their land to the Chicago-based company to build a solar farm capable of producing up to 300 megawatts of energy at its peak, enough to power approximately 57,000 homes, according to company spokesman Jay Poole. The project would encompass more than 2,000 acres near the New River Valley Airport and NRV Commerce Park.

Outpouring of support keeps restaurant serving despite pandemic Customers step in to help Black-owned eatery   PHOTO | FAMOUS TOASTERY Justin and Kim Griffith, owners of a Famous Toastery franchise in Center City, rebounded from laying off 30 employees due to the pandemic when customers responded to their call to action in support of their Black-owned business. Justin Griffith knows how to get ready for high-pressure situations, but 12 years in the National Football League could not prepare him for 2020. The former fullback played for the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders and Seattle Seahawks from 2003-09 and went on to coach with the Raiders. In 2018, he and his wife Kim became Famous Toastery franchisees at 330 S. Tryon St. Their restaurant is conveniently located on one of the busiest streets in Uptown, with frequent foot traffic from people heading into work, grabbing a bite with friends and family, or enjoying a meal before a Carolina Panthers game.
