There s been no official word, but new broke via Questlove, who posted a tribute on his Instagram, writing, This man was legendary and a pivotal member of one of the most legendary groups in hip hop. This is sad man. Whodini formed in Brooklyn in 1982, with Fletcher and his signature Zorro hat alongside co-founder and main lyricisct Jalil Hutchins and DJ Grandmaster Dee. The band s Magic s Wand was the first rap single to have an accompanying music video, and their classic singles include Freaks Come Out at Night, The Haunted House of Rock, One Love, Five Minutes Of Funk and Friends. Whodini were honored with the the Hip Hop Icon Award at the 3rd Annual Black Music Honors in 2018.

The group s Grandmaster Dee confirmed the news to Variety after the Roots’ Questlove first announced Fletcher s death on social media on Wednesday. No cause of death has been given. A Brooklyn native known for his trademark Zorro hat, Fletcher formed Whodini with fellow rapper Jalil Hutchins in 1982, quickly rising to prominence in the early 80s New York hip-hop scene. Pioneering from the start their debut single Magic s Wand was among the first rap songs with an accompanying music video the duo was later joined by DJ Grandmaster Dee, and saw a breakthrough with their second album,

Whodini member John “Ecstasy” Fletcher has passed away. On Wednesday (December 23), Whodini’s de facto leader Jalil Hutchins shared a Facebook post that read, “Pray for our family. Today is a dark day.” While the post was purposely vague, closer inspection of the comment section revealed Ectasy has indeed passed on. Several Hip Hop luminaries also confirmed his passing on social media, including Questlove, Chuck D and A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip. No immediate cause of death has been disclosed. Hailing from New York City, Whodini was formed in 1982 and became widely known for several classic Hip Hop songs such as “Funky Beat,” “Friends,” “Freaks Come Out At Night,” “One Love” and “Five Minutes Of Funk.” They were also among the first groups to incorporate R&B into their music, laying the foundation for New Jack Swing.
