Ava DuVernay’s “Naomi” and a spinoff of “All American” have both been ordered to series at The CW.
Also at the network, the live-action “Powerpuff” pilot is being reworked and repiloted off-cycle, with the cast and writers all remaining with the project. Additionally, the “Nancy Drew” spinoff “Tom Swift” is still under consideration for a series order. No pilot was shot for the potential series, though the title character was introduced in an episode of “Nancy Drew” this season.
DuVernay’s “Naomi” is based on the DC Comics character of the same name from Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and illustrator Jamal Campbell. Kaci Walfall stars as the titular hero, an “effortlessly cool and confident high school student” who discovers she has the ability to travel across the multiverse.

As renewed rumours of a Black Superman movie swirl, here is the complicated history of reimagining the most iconic comic hero as a Black man. In 2008, during his presidential campaign, Barack Obama told a joke at a charity event. Contrary to the rumours you have heard, I was not born in a manger, he said. I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father, Jor-El, to save the planet Earth.
The CW Reveals ‘Naomi’ Lead With Kaci Walfall
Development of new shows for The CW is ongoing as always as we’ve got some finishing off this coming cycle and one or two others may be getting a bit “long in the tooth” as the saying goes, and it’s best to be prepared. With a few different things in the mix, we learned last December that Ava DuVernay is currently developing a new series for the network with
Naomi. The project has her teamed up with
Arrow writer and co-executive producer Jill Blankenship to write and executive produce this new series. DuVernay for her part is also working on the development process for a
Naomi to series. DuVernay and
Jill Blankenship will write and exec produce the pilot.

DuVernay shared the first promotional photo of Wallfall as Naomi in a Twitter post along with the caption, “I love this show so much and have had sheer, downright fun creating it. Feel like a teenager again. LOL. Kaci is a phenom. Truly excited for her and grateful to all involved in bringing NAOMI to life!”
In related news, earlier this year, DuVernay signed an exclusive podcasting deal with Spotify.
