M1 MacBooks Handily Beats Windows on ARM Laptops Benchmarks Posted by Mahit Huilgol on Dec 16, 2020 in Mac, News Apple’s latest M1 powered MacBooks are hogging the limelight. The ARM-based laptop is blazingly fast, and benchmarks have confirmed the same. A few years back, Windows debuted its ARM lineup, on Surface and other devices. PCWorld has put both ARM-based and emulated Intel software on Surface Pro X. Unsurprisingly, the Surface Pro X comes nowhere close to Apple’s M1 powered Macs. Microsoft recently started bundling 64-bit emulator and this gave a chance to test MacBook Air M1 with Surface Pro X. PC World used Microsoft Surface Pro X with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx is the testing rig. To run 64-bit X86 apps, they downloaded and installed Windows Insider Build 21277. Also included is an HP Pavillion x360 Convertible 14. On the other side stood Apple MacBook Air with an M1 chip.

Tested: How badly Windows on Arm compares to the new Mac M1s

Tested: How badly Windows on Arm compares to the new Mac M1s Two years ago, Windows on Arm looked viable. Today, it needs a lifeline. Credit: Microsoft After Apple released its impressive M1 Arm chip on its new Macs, and Microsoft followed with its long-awaited 64-bit X86 emulator, we had just one question: How does Windows on Arm compare to MacOS on Arm? The answer: badly. Very, very badly. Running Windows apps on Arm processors has a few wrinkles. For one, there are only two chips currently powering Windows on Arm machines: Qualcomm’s own processors, such as the Snapdragon 8cx and Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2, as well as the derivative SQ1 and SQ2 processors Microsoft co-designed with Qualcomm. The latter two processors both appear in Microsoft’s Surface Pro X tablet.
