With assembly elections just a few months away, all the political parties in Tamil Nadu are gearing up to attract voters with various schemes and promises. Like the previous elections, the ‘MGR successor card’, however, is likely to be the dominant theme in this election as well.
The AIADMK, under the leadership of J Jayalalithaa, used to cash-in on the popularity of its founder and former chief minister MG Ramachandran. But the new political outfits launched by superstars recently are also trying to appropriate the legacy of Ramachandaran, the charismatic chief minister of the state.

A team of a high-level delegation led by the Election Commission secretary-general Umesh Sinha will be visiting Chennai to assess the preparedness for the general election to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The team will be on a two-day visit to the capital of Tamil Nadu on December 21 and December 22.

Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth is likely to be summoned again by the one-man commission probing the Thoothukudi violence for his remarks on the anti-Sterlite protesters.
According to Arul Vadivel Sekar, the counsel for the commission which is headed by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, the actor may be summoned in January.
Institution debunks reports of contempt proceedings against Latha Rajinikanth

Sree Raghavendra Educational Society, an institution which has superstar Rajinikanth’s wife Latha as its secretary, has issued a statement denying reports that she was subjected to contempt proceedings.
It said dissemination of any information contrary to details provided by them is nothing but an attempt to malign the institution as well as Latha Rajinikanth.
The institution had submitted an application in Madras High Court, seeking an extension to the deadline of vacating the property till April 2021. The same was in response to a civil lawsuit filed against the institution by Ch. Venkateswarlu, Ch. Poornachandra Rao, the landlords, as well as three others in 2014, alleging renta

In 1996, when Rajinikanth had pledged his support to the late GK Moopanar’s Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC)-DMK alliance in the assembly election, the former’s party used the lines from Rajinikanth’s 1992 movie ‘Annamalai’ as their party’s theme song. Rajinikanth had essayed the role of a milkman in the movie. Moopanar’s TMC, which was launched just before the election, used the posters of Rajinikanth riding a bicycle for their campaigning as they were contesting on the bicycle symbol.
Rajinikanth’s fans campaigned across the state for the TMC-DMK alliance on bicycles, which is said to have played a role part in their victory in their debut elections.
