Fraud as legality

Fraud as legality April 4, 2021 By July 2007, General Musharraf had started feeling nervous. He felt he needed to reach out and build a good opinion of himself among those with a voice in society beyond the bubble he had come to inhabit. Several evenings with small numbers of ‘thought leaders’ were arranged around the country. This writer was invited to one. We were allowed to question the general. On my turn, I asked him about his declared intent to contest the election for the presidency while remaining army chief. I reminded him that doing so would be unconstitutional. The general laughed loudly. ‘I will tell my lawyers to scribble something on a piece of paper which I will sign and it will become law and will allow me to do what I intend to do.’ I persisted, ‘That would destroy the spirit of the constitution.’ The general was not going to back off. He responded, ‘I will do something about the spirit too.’

Terms for peace

Terms for peace April 2, 2021 As Pakistan lurches through its worst wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, talk of peace with India fuels a fresh round of speculation about prospects and obstacles in the path ahead. Peace, of course, is understood to be a broad public good in Pakistan among political and policy groups that take a long view of the region, especially given the high cost of conflict for two nuclear neighbours that have been at war four times since 1948, and at strategic loggerheads most of our postcolonial history. The first problem is that this view is not necessarily reflected beyond a point in current Indian thinking, particularly among the ranks of the hyper-nationalist Modi s BJP, which is overtly different from the Vajpayee BJP, in as much as it has gone the extra mile in aggressively alienating Kashmiris and Indian Muslims as well as its own population of the poor, dispossessed and socially excluded Indians.

UAE projects power in India-Pakistan reconciliation talks

Published date: 2 April 2021 07:57 UTC | Last update: 4 sec ago After years of growing friction, India and Pakistan in recent weeks have moved towards somewhat of a detente, with a surprising interlocutor reportedly encouraging the two to bury the hatchet: the United Arab Emirates. Emirati involvement in South Asia is nothing new, yet Abu Dhabi appears to be taking a more significant diplomatic role, which analysts say is a chance for the wealthy Gulf country to further project power. Last month saw India and Pakistan issue in a rare joint statement agreeing to respect a 2003 ceasefire along the heavily militarised border in the disputed territory of Kashmir.
