JOURNEYS | UVAGUT TV Canada s 1st all Indigenous language channel launches in Inuktitut

CFNR Network Jan 18, 2021 2:00 PM Today is a big day for Inuk people across Canada, because as of 12:01 this morning, the first all Inuit Inuktitut television channel launched, which is available to anyone with a Shaw Direct subscription. UVAGUT TV was decades in the making, and will feature four hours a day of children’s programming, live political and cultural events, as well as movies and TV by Inuk creators. On our show this evening is one of the major players behind UVAGUT TV, Dr. Zacharias Kunuk, a filmmaker who’s been involved in pushing Inuit entertainment forward for years. In our interview he’ll talk about the long journey leading up to this momentous day, and discuss the struggles he faced over the years in trying to create work in his own language.

Newly formed Kitimat Airshed group promotes collaboration on clean air

CFNR Network Jan 18, 2021 12:29 PM A new independent entity in Kitimat that aims to facilitate communications and collaboration on air quality between local stakeholders, has officially launched. The Kitimat Airshed Group is composed of representatives from the District of Kitimat, the Haisla Nation, Rio Tinto, LNG Canada, Kitimat Chamber of Commerce, BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, Unifor2301, Northern Health, Kitimat Terrace Clean Air Coalition, and members of the communities of Kitimat, Terrace, and surrounding First Nations. Its mission is to provide air quality education to support public awareness and promote clean air. As well as providing input to the regulatory decision-making process. The group held its first formal meeting in October 2020 and will continue meeting on a regular basis.
