UMass Dartmouth Launches SouthCoast Working Podcast
The Arnold M. Dubin/UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center has announced the launching of a new podcast that is geared towards the issues and struggles facing the workforce here on the SouthCoast.
Both New Bedford and Fall River have a long, rich history of being working class towns. Fall River and their textile mills were a big part of the industrial revolution.
New Bedford lit the world with the whaling industry. When whaling became obsolete, manufacturing was the major focus. As the nation s most valuable fishing port, seafood has obviously always been a critically important part of New Bedford s economy.
John Methia and his wife Cheryl call it their estate car – a car they take to poke around at SouthCoast yard sales on the weekends.
Methia picked up the 1979 Chrysler Town and Country station wagon about two years ago. He almost fell over when he was told the price. The owner only wanted $1,700 for the vintage car. It was his grandfather s car and he had just bought a new Honda Accord. He just wanted to get rid of it. Right now in the collectible market, any wooden panel station wagons are starting to get hot, Methia said. Those 1980 Jeep Wagoneers are on fire. No one can touch them.

Fall River Satanic Cult Murders Focus of New EPIX Docuseries
Coming off the successful filming of
Jungleland on the SouthCoast and the Quibi (now Roku) production of
Run This Town, a look at the alleged corruption in the Fall River mayor s office during the Jasiel Correia administration, Fall River has once again been thrust into the spotlight.
A new docuseries will be released on EPIX this spring that will focus on a streak of brutal Fall River murders back in 1979, in an era known for the Satanic Panic. Three young women were killed in what was believed to be a part of a disturbing, satanic cult ritual. According to a press release from EPIX, the cult leader, a man named Carl Drew, was practicing human sacrifice. Drew was captured and sent to prison for life without parole.
Sad news to report, but yet another SouthCoast restaurant/bar has fallen victim to the economic downfall brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Libad s Seaside Tavern, located in New Bedford s South End, has officially posted the business on the real estate market, listed by Becky Demelo of Pelletier Realty.
The tavern is listed as a commercial building with an acreage of 0.12, located on the corner of Brock Avenue and Clara Street. It is being sold for an asking price of $329,900. Not only are you getting the restaurant, but you’re also receiving a full liquor license, stock and inventory, and an off-street parking lot with handicapped parking options as well. If you ask me, I d say you’re getting your money’s worth.
