For Your Health: Tips help reduce risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome typically occurs in children under the age of 1 and it is the sudden, unexpected and unexplained death of a child. SIDS is determined as the cause of the death of an infant when everything else is ruled out.
While the cause of the syndrome has not been determined, many risk factors are known.
For example, drinking or smoking during pregnancy and after birth, premature birth or low-weight birth, mothers younger than 20, and sharing a bed with parents or caregivers all increase the risk associated with SIDS. There are typically between three and seven sleep-related infant deaths each year in Solano County.
