The need for more durable and sustainable hiking trails in Maine has come into the spotlight during the coronavirus pandemic as land trusts have experienced a surge in hikers, some of them on trails badly in need of repair.

Skowhegan Outdoors and Somerset Woods Trustees will lead a Friday stroll from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 16, along the trails in Coburn Woods on Russell Road.
This walk, about three miles over easy/moderate terrain, will start at dusk to reach Taylor Field in time for sunset, then use headlamps for the walk back. This trail is accessible for all ages, and people are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to check in, dress warmly, wear boots appropriate for snow or mud and practice tick safety (long pants, socks), bring water and snacks, and wear a face mask.

Maine Farmland Trust, in Belfast, is one of eight nonprofit organizations across the state to share a $250,000 grant from Maine Community Foundation’s Maine Land Protection grant program.
Launched last year, the program provides grants for land acquisition or land conservation easement projects.
The Trust will use its $20,000 share to purchase an easement on the new home of Liberation Farms, a cooperative farm led by the Somali Bantu Community Association and their members, according to Maine CF, in a news release.
