Below are just some of the important decisions made from this week’s council meeting.   Esk recreation ground upgrades considered A recommendation put forward by the Esk Recreation Grounds Advisory Committee will be taken for consideration by Somerset Regional Council. Following a meeting in November, the committee put forward the need to install new water troughs at the ground in the fat cattle yards. Council has agreed to consider the upgrade if it could be carried out on a budget neutral basis.

Council to restrict vehicle access to popular watering holes

Somerset Regional Council yesterday made the bold decision to restrict vehicle access near Twin Bridges and Savages Crossing, via Fernvale. The move comes following months of community outrage regarding anti-social behaviour occurring at the sites Barriers will be installed along road reserves, as well as appropriate signage and security cameras. Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the drastic measures was necessary to try and kerb the disgusting behaviour occurring at the sites. It is incredibly disappointing that council is forced to take this action to minimise the health and safety risk to the public, but we see no other choice, Cr Lehmann said.

Quality restaurant wanted for former popular cafe site

Premium Content Subscriber only SOMERSET council will push for a quality restaurant to take over the vacant business space at Cormorant Bay on Wivenhoe Dam. The former Cormorant Bay cafe was closed last year for repairs after Seqwater identified the site required extensive structural repairs. In the recent Somerset Regional Council meeting, councillors agreed to write to Seqwater, advocating for a “quality restaurant” to be established at the former cafe site. Cormorant Bay Cafe Aerial. Mayor Graeme Lehmann said it was a “huge shame” the popular venue had closed. “We recognise the strong tourism benefit this asset brings to the region and our local economy,” Cr Lehmann said.

Vehicle access to popular river spots to be blocked off

10th Dec 2020 11:56 AM LONGSTANDING issues with people dumping waste, including human excrement and drug utensils, and tearing up river banks at popular tourist sites along the Brisbane River have forced the local council into action. Somerset Regional Council will install barriers along road reserves to restrict vehicle access close to Twin Bridges and Savages Crossing near Fernvale. Security cameras and signage will also be put in place. Locals are fed up with rubbish being dumped along the Brisbane River in the Somerset region. Locals are fed up with visitors leaving all manners of rubbish along the Mid Brisbane River catchment that runs through the region.
