Sheriff Still Seeking Person Of Interest In Wauwatosa Man's Death - Wauwatosa, WI - The Sauk County Sheriff's Office says they have a "person of interest" seven months after a Wauwatosa man was killed at Devil's Lake.
BARABOO, Wis. – It’s been more than seven months since 24-year-old John Schmutzer was murdered at Wisconsin’s most popular state park.
After spending thousands of hours sifting through hundreds of tips, tracking down dozens of people at the park that day for interviews, and issuing more than 30 search warrants and subpoenas, police feel they’re closer than ever to finding the person responsible.
“The more information we can get from the public, the better this investigation goes,” said Lt. Christopher Zunker of the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department said. “I still am convinced that there is someone or some people that know or strongly suspect who is responsible for this homicide. Those people need to call us.”

BARABOO, Wis. âDetectives have identified a person of interest in connection to a homicide at Devilâs Lake State Park last fall, but they are still needing more information from the public to solve this case.
According to a release by the Sauk County Sheriffâs Office, witnesses remember seeing a man who fell down several times while running âfranticallyâ and âout of controlâ in the park. Witnesses said he was not in âstandard running apparelâ and wore darker colored pants and a dark colored top, possibly a hooded sweatshirt. They also described him as being around 6-feet tall with a slender to average build.
