Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Lacrosse: ConVal girls drop one in OT; boys win again

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript Published: 5/3/2021 1:43:27 PM Change the outcome of just one or two possessions, and the ConVal girls’ lacrosse team would have pulled off the win over Lebanon Saturday. But the Cougars just let too many little things pile up, and the Raiders won in overtime, 9-8. Derek Sorbello’s Cougars have just 10 players with varsity experience; the rest are sophomores or freshman who never took the field before last week, or are new to the sport entirely. Couple that with ConVal’s perennial preseason limitations – snow and rain aren’t kind to their fields, which cuts down on practice time – and it says  lot about the Cougars that they were even in a game this early in the year, let alone in position to win one. Nonetheless, mental mistakes were the key to ConVal’s downfall Saturday morning.

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Four more school districts join ConVal funding lawsuit

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript Published: 4/26/2021 3:35:19 PM Four more school districts joined ConVal’s lawsuit against the state over education funding last week. The Fall Mountain, Claremont, Newport, and Hillsboro-Deering School Districts joined ConVal, Monadnock, Mascenic, and Winchester School Districts in their cause after Superior Court Judge David Ruoff allowed other school districts 30 days to join the lawsuit on Wednesday, April 21. “For nearly 30 years the State of New Hampshire has ignored the spirit of the original Claremont funding decision. As a result it has shifted its responsibility to local communities, creating funding inequities across the state,” ConVal Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders said in a statement. “We welcome the Fall Mountain, Claremont, Newport and Hillsboro-Deering School Districts, and encourage other districts to join us in ensuring the state meets its constitutional responsibility to the children of New Hampshire.”

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Outdoor learning, not just a pandemic product, persists

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript Published: 4/19/2021 10:21:19 AM Outdoor classrooms and nature-based schools picked up new followers during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the enthusiasm is continuing beyond the necessities of the pandemic. New outdoor classroom enterprises are underway at Peterborough Elementary School, and a new nature preschool is set to open in Peterborough this September, while the lessons learned during the pandemic bolstered Robin’s Nest Nature Preschool. The pandemic stepped up outdoor class time The successes of outdoor learning this fall encouraged the Peterborough Elementary School PTO to fund more permanent outdoor learning opportunities, PTO Vice President Mackenzie Nichols said. Even prior to the pandemic, ConVal had been looking into outdoor classrooms for all the District’s elementary schools, PTO president Denise Zimmer said. The PTO decided to use the momentum from this past fall and pursue more permanent outdoor learning options, rather than wait fo

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - ConVal School District: Principal finalist had suit on record

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript Published: 6/14/2017 10:22:32 PM Editor’s note: An incomplete version of this story was published in the June 15 print edition. Here is the full story. The second finalist for the ConVal High School principal position, who was vetted out of 100 applicants by a national search firm and a school committee, wasn’t offered the job because of a 2012 lawsuit, according to Superintendent Kim Saunders. Shannon Mayfield, a former principal at high schools in Pennsylvania with at least 11 years of administrative experience, was one of two finalists picked by the school’s committee, after Ray and Associates Inc., a nationwide school executive search company, helped pare the pool of applicants down to 11. The two finalists Mayfield and Michael Tenters  toured the school in May. Tenters was offered the position but declined for personal reasons.
