Business leaders and trade bodies in Barishal have urged the government to ensure adequate support for them in the upcoming national budget such that they can survive the Covid-19 fallouts.
For example, launch facilities are a vital service in the country s southern regions, where at least 500 vessels of all sizes sail back and forth from Dhaka, according to Saidur Rahman Rintu, vice-president of the Bangladesh Launch Owners Association.

Launches have started operating from Barishal and are charging double the usual fares and are failing to follow any hygiene rules.
A total of 16 launches left Barishal Launch Terminal today for various destinations including Dhaka, Bhola and Mehendiganj, reports our Barishal correspondent. Of the launches, at least five-six left for Dhaka.
Restrictions on public transport were lifted in the country from today.
As seen by our correspondent, no social distancing was maintained by passengers on the deck of the launches. There was also no awareness campaign from the launch authorities. At least 10,000 passengers left for Dhaka today from the terminal.
Many youths are coming to buy panjabis of different colours and range, he added.
Other than branded retail outlets or showrooms, roadside stalls and hawkers have also seen a steady uptick in business.
Currently, there are more than 500 hawkers and other small retailers operating in Khulna city with about 200 of them being seasonal occupations that depend on Eid sales.
Thanks to competitive prices and convenient locations, many of these roadside sellers are often busier than their large-scale counterparts. My store has been packed for the last few days and I am very pleased with sales so far, said Muhammad Mamun Hossain, the owner of Mamun Cloth Store.

Launch operators in the country s waterway-dependent southern region think the completion of Padma bridge will have little impact on their business.
When passengers will start using the bridge, the number of water transport users may see a 20 per cent drop, but, at the same time, goods transportation through waterways will increase, they believe.
Besides, the number of VIP passengers could increase as well, allowing launch operators to raise the cabin fare for the new services they will introduce to remain competitive.
