In the first split Verruso sent Slated To Win to the lead from post two and they led the competition through the first stanza in :28.4. Despite being challenged Verruso was comfortable as he passed the half in :58.
Ooh Rah (John Calabrese) was the first to move off the pylons but he ran into road trouble behind some stalled trotters as the field headed for the three quarters. At the top of the lane Slated To Win was comfortable and was able to rebuff a late charge from Always A Good Time (Joe Faraldo) before bracing for Southwind Frost (Bob Hechkoff) who was enjoying a two-hole journey. The 11-race card at Freehold Raceway on Friday (April 23) features both the stars of yesterday and of today. The program includes a prep for the Lady Suffolk, as well as a stacked renewal of the Preferred Handicap Trot.
The Lady Suffolk Prep drew a field of six three-year-old trotting fillies, and is scheduled as the third race on the card, with a post time of about 1:10 p.m. (EDT). Ron Burke sends out a pair in here including Hot As Hill, the winner of two legs of the Kindergarten series last fall at the Meadowlands. She qualified at Freehold last week, trotting the mile in 1:59.1. Her uncoupled stablemate, The Queen B, finished third last week in a conditioned trot at Freehold, and was sixth in the Kindergarten final last year.
One of the east coast s top trotters makes his return to Freehold Raceway on Friday (April 16), as Meladys Monet looks for his third win at Freehold this year.
Meladys Monet was assigned the outside post position in the eight-horse Preferred Handicap trot, but nevertheless looms as a serious contender. In his 12-year-old season, this Hermann Heitmann-trained gelding continues in fine form, with five wins from 10 starts on the year. He enters this race on a two-race winning streak at Yonkers Raceway. He s won twice at Freehold this year, taking the Preferred Handicap on Jan. 15 and Jan. 22.
Eric Abbatiello, who drove him to victory in those two starts, will once again be in the sulky.
