One of the east coast s top trotters makes his return to Freehold Raceway on Friday (April 16), as Meladys Monet looks for his third win at Freehold this year.
Meladys Monet was assigned the outside post position in the eight-horse Preferred Handicap trot, but nevertheless looms as a serious contender. In his 12-year-old season, this Hermann Heitmann-trained gelding continues in fine form, with five wins from 10 starts on the year. He enters this race on a two-race winning streak at Yonkers Raceway. He s won twice at Freehold this year, taking the Preferred Handicap on Jan. 15 and Jan. 22.
Eric Abbatiello, who drove him to victory in those two starts, will once again be in the sulky.
Austin Siegelman went into the Friday (April 9) card at Freehold Raceway on a hot streak, having won four races on each of the last three race days. This Friday, he did one better, with five victories.
His biggest victory came in the Preferred Handicap Trot, where he guided Levitation to victory. Coming off a win in the AHDC Amateur Trot, Levitation was the 8-5 favourite in the field of eight. Siegelman sent him to the early lead, but Winneress wrestled back control and cleared to the front just after the opening quarter. Undeterred, Siegelman kept his drive in the pocket, letting Winneress set the pace.
The outside post was no deterrent for Bettor Memories at Freehold Raceway on Saturday (March 13), as he cruised to an easy win in the Preferred Handicap pace.
Despite the outside post, Bettor Memories went off as the 3/2 favourite in his Freehold debut. Driver George Brennan sent him directly to the lead, and crossed over to the pylons without much trouble before the opening quarter. Bettor Memories got the opening quarter in a sharp :27.4, then slowed it down for a :57.1 half mile.
At the three-quarter point, Brennan began to open up his drive, and got through three-quarters in 1:25.3. No one was able to seriously challenge the leader in the stretch, and Bettor Memories cruised under the wire a length in front, stopping the clock in a sharp 1:53.3.
