Sarah Oppenheimer will create a monumental permanent work for the University of Texas at Austin

The American sculptor Sarah Oppenheimer, best-known for her works that disorient the viewer’s perceptions between architecture and space, will unveil a $1.7m commission for the Landmarks public art programme at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) later this year. The sprawling but little-known outdoor art campus includes works by artists like Mark di Suvero, Louise Bourgeois and Sol LeWitt across a 433-acre campus. The work, titled C-010106, will be installed on the footbridge between the Gary Thomas Energy Building and the Engineering Education and Research Center, two new buildings of the Cockrell School of Engineering designed by the New York-based firm Ennead Architects with Jacobs. “Sarah’s work, and the process that she undertakes to make her work, seemed to have so much resonance with the space, and so beautifully complement engineering activities and processes,” says Andrée Bober, the

UT News Search Button Mia Stanley, UT21 Senior Art history senior Mia Stanley on finding community with the Longhorn Band and deciphering ancient language mysteries during the pandemic. By: Diana Lee Mia Stanley’s favorite UT memories are small moments: sitting on campus while birds chirp in the background; admiring the grass and trees, a welcome change of scenery from the desert of Odessa, her hometown in West Texas; and meeting people she wouldn’t have met otherwise. Since then, oil’s allure has drawn hundreds of thousands of workers to the state, transforming Houston and West Texas’ Permian Basin into global energy hubs in the process. Naturally, Austin, with its progressive support of green initiatives, is the last Texas town you’d associate with fossil fuels. Whether it’s new resident Elon Musk’s potential to transform the state with a giant battery connected to our energy grid or the city’s rapid transition from gas guzzlers to electric vehicles (EVs), Austin appears increasingly untethered from the state’s oil-rich days of yesteryear.
