CFMEU NSW
The NSW CFMEU has reaffirmed that its Green Ban on the demolition of Willow Grove stands and is warning the NSW Government against using the cover of the covid lockdown to try to bulldoze the heritage building.
“The CFMEU will stand with the community of Parramatta to protect this unique and irreplaceable piece of local heritage,” said Darren Greenfield, CFMEU NSW Secretary.
“If any builders move onto the site to try to commence demolition work they need to understand that the union will step in.”
“The State Government and Infrastructure NSW have more than enough on their plates dealing with the covid outbreak and its impact on the community without kicking off a fight over Willow Grove.”

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) (Construction Division) placed a Green Ban on the site in April last year and a recent meeting of 200 union delegates vowed to continue to block work on the site.
NPRAG spokesperson Suzette Meade said the case brought by residents to the court was that Infrastructure NSW had failed to consider any alternative sites in its Environmental Impact Statement for the Parramatta Powerhouse Museum development.
Meade said the group is consulting its legal team about options but that “Legal proceedings were always our Plan B.
“Plan A has always been and will continue to be the power and the passion of the community with the unions, working together,” Meade continued. “In the spirit of Jack Mundey and with our Green Ban, we will save this site and Willow Grove will stay forever on Phillips Street Parramatta.”
The necessity of anti-capitalism in the climate movement
Why the climate movement needs anti-capitalism.
May 31, 2021
Broadly, capitalism refers to an economic and political system in which industry – the means of production – is controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state, or the people. What the dictionary doesn’t note, however, is that at the rotten core of capitalism lies exploitation and inequality. Anti-capitalism is essential not just for arresting the destruction of our planet but also in terms of addressing the systemic inequalities and exploitations that plague our society. Anti-capitalism must, therefore, be one of the pillars of the climate movement and anti-capitalist behaviour must form the basis of any approach to climate justice.
