PECOS, Texas – Maria Baeza Valeriano opened her front door to the view of a closed-down hotel and an oil workers’ camp, where migrant boys played soccer behind a shaded chain-link fence. “I feel so bad for them, for being all alone,” said Baeza Valeriano, who, in her 80s, is a mother of five, grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of eight. “It’s a lot, that the parents let their children go. I wouldn’t let go of my children for anything.”
