Biz Bites: Portland s latest residential stats, Maliseet housing development on tap

Anyone who isn t aware of the up up up price trend in Maine residential real estate over the past year is living in a (probabably very expensive) cave. And, in Portland, that s a trend on steroids. The median price of a single-family home in Portland jumped from $460,000 in February to $514,500 in March, according to the monthly stats put out by Benchmark Real Estate. Those listing a home can expect it to spend a zippy six days on the market. Multifamily Portland prices had a similar hike from February, with the median price of $667,500 is up from $612,500. Multifamilies spend about eight days on the market. The state median is $268,500.

Mellon Foundation and Arctaris Impact Investors, a Boston-based impact investment group, is launching a $20 million investment fund to underwrite economic development projects in distressed communities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. The fund, unveiled Wednesday, will target projects that support economic development, workforce training, infrastructure and sustainable job creation in qualified Opportunity Zones in the counties. Opportunity Zones are designated areas of distressed communities that carry special tax incentives for investment and development.

Saddleback businesses see success since the mountain s reopening

Saddleback Ski Area has been welcoming skiers once again for the last two months. The mountain officially reopened in mid-December, and businesses in the area are already seeing a boost in revenue. I believe we all can see a big boost, definitely a lot more people in the area, said Beth Haley Smith, co-owner of Furbish Brew House and Eats in downtown Rangeley.  Haley Smith and other business owners say they too have seen a surge in winter businesses since the mountain reopened. That s welcome news as well to small-town businesses greatly impacted by revenue losses connected to the pandemic.
