‘Everyone deserves to feel safe’: Biden administration focuses on MMIW crisis

The Biden administration is taking additional steps to address the crisis of missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives in hopes of putting the focus back on survivors, families and tribal nations.
During a media call on Tuesday afternoon, Secretary Deb Haaland stressed the importance of elevating the voices of those that often go unheard. She said she will be observing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day on May 5 in her office at the Department of the Interior.
“Like many, I will display a red shawl in my office on an empty chair red in honor of the movement that rang the alarm on this issue and the empty chair to symbolize those who have gone missing,” Haaland said from the nation’s capital.
MMIP Film ‘Say Her Name’ about Big Horn County Opens Wednesday
The short film ‘Say Her Name’ will be available for streaming starting at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday on You Tube.
Juliet Hayes of the Coushatta Tribe in Louisiana, the presenter for the film that chronicles the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls crisis in Big Horn County, spoke to KGVO News on Wednesday morning.
“Say Her Name is a film that was directed by Rain who is also the director of Somebody s Daughter,” said Hayes. “Somebody’s Daughter was a documentary on missing and murdered Indigenous women and Say Her Name is also about missing and murdered Indigenous women, however, specifically Say Her Name examines cases of missing and murdered indigenous people in Big Horn County, which the documentary says is the epicenter of the MMIWG crisis which is located in Hardin, Montana.”

The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors on Tuesday announced this year’s nominees for entertainment, documentaries, news, podcast/radio, children’s & youth, public service and arts. A total of 60 nominees were revealed as representing “the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and streaming media during 2020.”

PBS once again led the nominations with 12 programs, followed by Netflix with nine. HBO was next with five, and then Amazon and Showtime with three each, and Apple TV Plus and CBS with two apiece. Out of the nominees, half (in other words, 30) will be named winners and recognized during a virtual celebration in June.
